End of our week

This week we wrote letters to the head of the Macy's Day Parade, Amy! We are trying to convince her to put our balloons in this year's parade. Examples of our amazing balloons hang from our ceiling.

We finished up taking the WKCE tests! WOOHOOO!

In math, we are learning about angles. Right angles, acute angles, and obtuse angles! More to come with that =]

The Salvation Army truck came on Thursday (finally!) to pick up the food we collected.

THE NEWEST DIARY OF A WIMPY KID BOOK IS FINALLY HERE! Visit the book fair through Wednesday, November 21st.

Reading Minute Update

Our Reading Minute log has a new look! On Friday, our class took a vote and changed the format of our Reading Minute log, replacing Weekly Reading sheets with one monthly one. At the beginning of every month, your child will write their reading goal on a blank calendar. This calendar will be stapled into their planner for safe keeping. (See page 44 for November’s calendar) Here is where they will track their reading minutes outside of school. At the end of each week (on Saturday), they should add up their minutes for the week. At the end of the month, they will turn in their calendar and get a new one. They will still be working towards their monthly goal to earn a reward. Please let me know if you have any questions on this change.

Geometry Vocabulary

We started off our geometry unit discussing new vocabulary terms. We talked about points, lines, line segments, intersecting lines, parallel lines and rays. After we took notes on each, we took out the tape to display our learning. But we didn't stop there! We used our bodies to explain each of our new vocabulary words! Groups then were assigned a different term to define on our website and create picture captions. Here's what they came up with!


 

Intersecting lines are lines that cross and go on forever. 

Elijah, Kobe,  and Ella did the intersecting  lines. They made a big X by overlapping.

A line is a straight path that extends forever in opposite directions.

The people who did the line were Mari, Jonah, Bethany, and Brett. They had two arrows and one line.

A Parallel Line

A parallel line is two lines that are always the same distance away.

Our class is showing us what a parallel line is because they are always the same distance apart.

Line Segment

A line segment has a point at one end, a line in the middle, and a point at the other end. A line segment never goes on.  A line segment is a part of a line between two points.

Cody is the line, Courtney and Austin are points.

A ray is a line that starts at an endpoint and continues on forever in one direction.

Aidren was the arrow.

Ameila was the line.

Genna was the point .

A point is a dot that starts and ends a line segment. A period for example is point. 

This is a point.   . Makenna, Jacob, and MJ (MaryJane) are folding down into a tornado position to act like a point. They are trying to show what a point looks like. There are more than 1,000 kind of points in the world. Here are a couple. A period, a on button, a button and your eye.

Our spelling pattern for list nine are words with the "ow" sound. When you hear the "ow" sound, as in clown and round, remember it is often spelled with the pattern ow or ou.

WKCE testing starts tomorrow. Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and has breakfast in the morning. We will have three days of reading this week and three days of math next week. Please try your hardest to be here every day!  

We are also voting for president tomorrow! Our ballots will be taken to the Kids Voting USA headquarters for tallying. The results usually are published at some point soon after--will give you further information when I/we know more about that.

Picture retake day is Wednesday November 7^th. 

Thursday is a half-day. Students will be leaving at noon.

I will not be sending home new book order forms this month because we will be having a book fair here at Riverside during Parent-Teacher Conferences. Remember: you can always use our classroom code (L6HD6) online at scholastic.com to earn points towards free books for our classroom!

Everyone set a new reading goal for November. (Reading goals were written on the hard copy of this note and sent home for you to see.)Thank you as always for your support with reading outside of school. Remember: reading is reading. Getting ‘lost’ in a book isn’t the only way to read. We read all the time, every day, even when we don’t realize it! Have you ever thought of turning on the Closed Captioning on your TV?  Cereal boxes, restaurant menus, street signs, directions to a game! Reading is all around us! 

Last but not least: Parent-Teacher Conferences start next week! I can’t wait to see all of your smiling faces as you try to squeeze into your child’s desk!! *Just kidding! Regular sized chairs will be available =]

Outstanding October

WOW! This was a fantastic month. We had 13 of our classmates beat their October reading goals! We all sat down today to set our November reading goals. I can't wait to see how well we can do this month!

Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween!!! We had a FABULOUS party with lots of sweet (and healthy) treats, games, and even a school wide costume parade!

WOW!

Our class collected the most Box Tops of any class at Riverside during the month of September!  They collected a total of 795 Box Tops! WOW! Way to go Class!

Our words this week are all contractions using not, will, have, and are. A contraction is a short way of saying or writing two or more words. An apostrophe takes the place of one or more letters. Connect words that are related to each other because they have the same contraction part.

A touch of Halloween

I spend some time this weekend adding a few touches of Halloween to room 32. Our 'spelling spiders' are attacking us from all over the room!

 

 

They've set up their web in our Truffula Tree Forest.

And a mummy watches over us from the doorway!

End of week 7

This past week was "Red Ribbon Week". This brought up a discussion of activities you can do to stay healthy and active! Ask your child what they can do to stay active!

We used our spelling word patterns to make creepy spiders. Our room is now FILLED with GIANT spiders! AHHH!

We had a math test on Friday. In the next unit, we discuss telling time.

REMINDER: Next week we only have school Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Because of this, we will not have spelling words this week. Also, since we do not have school on Friday, October 26 (the day I have asked all book orders to be in by) any paper orders from this months book orders should be in by Wednesday. You can ALWAYS order online through scholastic.com. If you do, make sure to use our classroom's code (L6HD6) to help us earn points for free books!

Because of the short school week, our Weekly Reading Minutes sheet (WRM) for this week will be due on Wednesday, October 24th. Remember, minutes read outside of school can't be counted towards your goal unless it gets turned in!

Working Together

          Today we practiced working together in Literacy Discussion groups. We all read the same book, took notes while reading, and discussed it in groups of four. We are learning to use conversational phrases such as 'I think that..." "I agree/disagree..." "I didn't understand..." "I wanted to add..." I noticed..." We are well on our way to becoming expert talkers! =]

Week 6 Spelling

This week our focus is on words with 'k' and 'kw' sounds. The 'k' sound can be spelled with the pattern 'k', 'ck', or 'c'. The 'kw' sounds can be spelled with the 'qu' pattern.
