Spelling assessment


Dear Families-
Students who get zero or one wrong on the spelling pretest will receive a list of more challenging words for the following week. Students should bring home their list of words to study every Monday and will be tested on that list on Friday. I will post the word lists every week on our classroom website. Below I have listed the grading scale for our spelling tests.
 Spelling Assessment

Minimal 1
Basic 2
Proficient 3
Advanced 4
Student’s work and understanding do not meet grade level expectations.

More time, practice and assistance are needed at school and home to help the student reach expectations.

Student spells 64% or less of the core, transfer and high frequency words correctly.
Student’s work displays partial understanding of grade level expectations.

Mastery is often dependent on adult support.


Student spells 65% - 74% of the core, transfer and high frequency words correctly.
Student’s work displays a proficient understanding that meets most grade level expectations.





Student spells 75% - 100% of the core, transfer and high frequency words correctly.
Student’s work displays understanding of grade level expectations.






Student spells all (100%) of the core, transfer and high frequency words correctly.

Students spell two or more of the challenge words correctly.
